New Mexico continues to captivate locals and travelers with everything from ancient ancestral dwellings and amazing art installations to outdoor fun. Contrasting white sands and vast wildflower fields mingle with red rock cliffs and stunning mountain tops, adding depth to the State.
Ruidoso, New Mexico, offers an unforgettable vacation year-round, conveniently located by lakes, mountains, and outdoor adventures. Spice up your summer fun with a trip to one of Ruidoso, Mexico's most popular attractions, Grindstone Lake.
There are many ways to enjoy the perfect day at the lake. Grindstone Lake offers everything from water activities and fishing to hiking and biking. Be sure to check
Ruidoso’s official website for seasonal hours of operation, permit requirements, and guidelines.
Nothing spells summer fun like boating; the two go hand in hand at Grindstone Lake. Visitors can boat year-round but must purchase a boat permit on-site. For those without a boat, you can rent one or bring a kayak or paddleboard and enjoy a slower-paced day of tranquility.
Grindstone Lake is one of only two lakes in the region, and during holiday weekends, the area gets fished heavily. However, the lake is regularly stocked with rainbow trout and, on occasion, catfish and smallmouth bass.
Anglers love this lake since it is one of two public waters in the area in which you can put a non-motorized boat. Escape the crowds, grab your fishing gear, and enjoy the well-stocked Lake.
Did you know New Mexico has more cows than people? In fact, The State is populated by a plethora of wild animals and many of them are located in scenic outdoor areas like Grindstone Lake. Common wildlife seen include black bears, mule deer, elk, blue heron, Osprey, and a rare Bald Eagle sighting if you’re lucky.
The Osprey, which can be seen diving into the lake during their migration, is the most common animal in the area. Head to the provided viewing area to view these majestic creatures without disturbing them.
Get your heart pumping and enjoy Grindstone Lake’s multi-use trail system, designed by the International Mountain Biking Association. Completed in 2014, the trail system consists of 5 trails totaling 18 miles. The trails are open to a variety of activities like mountain biking, hiking, and horseback riding. Please be courteous in interactions with fellow trail users.
Get your energy out and enjoy some summertime fun while sliding, bouncing, and climbing on a giant, inflatable platform. Wibit Water Park is Ruidoso's newest and most unique attraction at Grindstone Lake. The inflatable platform sits atop Grindstone Lake and has exciting play features like giant slides, towers, trampolines, ramps, and wiggle bridges.
Perfect for a family get-together, birthday party, or special event, WIbit Water Park is the best way for all ages to beat the heat this summer during your vacation. Wibit Park is open from Memorial Day until Labor Day annually.
Looking for something unique to try during your visit to Grindstone Lake? A visit to the horse corral might just be what you’re searching for! Grindstone Stables has been offering horseback riding for over 30 years, along with seasonal activities like carriage and sleigh rides.
The stable’s 3-mile trail is beginner-friendly and perfect for your whole family. The trail winds past Grindstone Lake and then takes you atop Wrangler Ridge for premier sights. Beef up your social media feed and snag a few panoramas during your scenic ride.
